When I begin a piece I don’t have a fixed idea beforehand, just an instinct for gesture, improvisation, perseverance and confidence. All my old ghosts are there – prehistoric man, crazy painters and Wild West cowboys. There is the desire for very primitive colour. I remember the children that I like to watch painting with both passion and concentration. There is playfulness and freedom. I seek a language, expression which is wild and intimate. “A musician once said: In art, the truth, what is real begins when you no longer understand what you are doing or what you know [...] So you need to come forward with great humility, completely blank and pure [...] and know how to retain your freshness and instinctiveness”.
