KARIN BABLOK
PORCELAINE
Thrown porcelain, both functional and artistic, is the focus of my work. I seek out challenges within this narrow framework. My entire concentration is focused on this meticulous research, and I enjoy losing myself in the openings and the possibilities I encounter. Last year I worked principally with coloured porcelain, but this year I have returned to my main focus, which involves finding the harmonies between the dark interventions coming into play between the interiors and exteriors for my vessels. I work on certain objects where the walls, whose structure derives from steep angles and gentle curves, are as thick as a razor blade. Precise lines link the outside and inside together. I also like to use porcelain’s transparency, with the black lines painted on the exterior being associated with the lines on the inside. So I play with different layers to draw out subtle motifs. My approach to gestural painting with ceramics is entirely different. Every time I start anew, once again I become curious to see the theme as it appears. Circles and lines appear, revealing a variety of atmospheres. Sometimes they evoke rushes blowing in the wind, a piece of fruit, the swaying of a willow, a vortex, a swimming fish. An intuitive approach creates a balance between the white surface and the brushstrokes of black glaze. The runs and drips of glaze are welcomed though not made deliberately, and the important thing is the freedom of the brushstrokes and the pleasure of creating them.
